EnviroKids returns for the 2009-2010 school year better than ever! Thanks to interest from Miguel, Lupita, Litzy, Andrea, Maleka, Brianna, and Jose we are making sure that PW classroom recycling is getting recycled. Look for more projects coming soon!

Too Much!

We have SO much going on because there is SO much to DO! Palmer Way is already a new place as far as recycling goes! Today, we figured out an easy way to save TEN MILLION gallons of water THIS YEAR! Just with our efforts, we are going to make this a reality! Pictures really are COMING SOON! Allison’s photo shoot with 450 breakfast boxes was great today. First Week Update

Man, what a productive week! Our after school crew, right now including Hannah, Laura, Celia, Josh, Camille, and a few others, has really taken over the classroom recycling bins making sure they all get sorted and processed correctly! The crew estimates that we have pulled about 18 pounds of recyclable paper A DAY out of the trash. That’s 90 pounds last week alone! We are told 120 pounds is equivalent to a tree’s worth of paper, so our work is paying off!

In addition to that paper, Allison set up the breakfast box recycling program in the cafeteria in the mornings, and she pulled 62 boxes the first day! If we multiply by 181 school days, that equals 11,222 boxes! JUST AT PALMER WAY! Multiply that times the 10 elementary schools in National City, and spreading our plans will get over ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND (100,000 !) breakfast boxes out of the trash! Talk about making a difference! Look for a picture of Allison and a week’s worth of boxes here soon!

In addition to all of that, Mary Anne and Shina have headed the morning group, getting the word out! The girls got the a.m. team going decorating and distributing recycle boxes for each teacher to save and reuse their one-side only paper. This week they got posters put together for what TO recycle and what NOT TO recycle. Later this week we will start on our digital media commercials, public-service announcements, and films.!

Welcome EnviroKids, DigiKids, Palmer Way Kids, and all kids, parents, and adults who want to help us make Palmer Way and the world a safer, cleaner, smarter, and more environmentally sensitive place. It is the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL and EnviroKids will already be getting busy. We will have our first official, morning meeting tomorrow, August 26 at 7:00 in Mr. Clarken’s room, C3!

We will start our efforts this year focused on recycling here at Palmer Way. We need to make sure that ALL of PW’s paper is getting into the recycling bin and not into the trash. This year we are going to do art projects, communicate with other school groups across the country and maybe across the world (!), and learn A LOT about chaning ourselves to change the world! This is our chance to DO SOMETHING as they are always saying on the PW News show, What You Need To Know!

This is going to be a great opportunity to have fun while we learn. Come with us and recycle, do research, educate other teachers and kids at Palmer Way, make movies and commercials – the list is as big as your imagination!
